Data quality of Grey time eBOSS observations


Beginning of this year run, APOGEE had transferred 66 grey time hours to eBOSS. Typically, eBOSS observations are taken during dark time. By definition, dark time is when the moon is illuminated less than 35 percent and bright time is when the moon is illuminated more than 35 percent. So, the MC asked about the quality of data obtained during the grey time.
I compiled the data and did some anaysis. Here are some basic statistics regarding this
  1. Total number of grey nights(shared with APOGEE) till 31 Dec 2016: 46 (Total eBOSS Hours: 203.733311947 )
  2. Total number of dark nights(shared with MANGA) till 31 Dec 2016: 62 (Total eBOSS Hours: 357.50908792 )
  3. No. of exposures when moon below horizon : 276
  4. No. of exposures when moon above horizon : 38

There is a 20 percent reduction in the R camera SN2 values when the moon is above the horizon as compared to moon below the horizon during a bright run.
The plot below shows the histogram and scatter plot of R1 and R2 SN2 values vs moon elevation. The solid circles are for ELG exposures and the hollow circles are for LRG/QSO exposures.
